Three Easy Projects for Spring

25Spring is an incredibly busy time in the garden, and with so much effort going into sowing, growing and digging there is often little energy left for making aesthetic improvements.  The UK’s premier timber garden features supplier, Forest Garden, suggests three easy projects that can be done now, or at any time of year to instantly transform overlooked areas of the garden.

  1. Use contrasting shapes

Aim: To create an entirely new focal point

Time needed: A few hours

What you’ll need:  An electric screwdriver, compost, plants of your choice

21Forest’s new Slender Planters are sleek, stylish and hardwearing – ideal for any garden that needs to be versatile as well as visually stimulating.  Made from solid FSC pressure treated wood with stainless metal lip – these planters are best used in sets of two or three, located in different areas of the garden.  Plant and place them with symmetry in mind, using two or three of the same plant to create a contemporary garden feel against a more natural or uneven backdrop such as a flower border or trellis.  The new Forest Slender Planters are available in large (RRP £99.99, holding 108 litres of compost) and small (£89.99, 79 litres of compost), and both can also be used as a temporary home for potted plants that are cluttering up the patio, making garden design even easier.

A new garden feature with a lick of paint

Aim: To add a splash of colour to tired timber

Time needed: A day (with plenty of time in between coats to enjoy the spring sunshine)

What you’ll need:  Paint, paintbrush

All it takes to instantly update a garden is a pot of paint, a brush and bit of imagination. Why not try a range of bright colours to make kids playhouses more imaginative, or add the latest shade of chalk paint to turn an unloved old shed into a shabby chic statement.  Structures that have planed panels and frames, such as the Limoge Arbour, RRP £479.99, are perfect for a two tone effect with white and soft dark colours like turquoise and slate grey.  Forest’s pressure treated timber products eliminate the need for additional timber treatment products. However, pressure treated wood is still as easy to paint or stain as untreated wood.

  1. Swap your shed for a summerhouse!

Aim: To create a beautiful garden room

Time needed: 5 hours to build your new summerhouse, plus all weekend to decorate and enjoy!

What you’ll need:  Another person to help clear as space and to put up summerhouse (Forest’s team can handle assembly if not)
Sheds are very useful to store garden furniture, tools and machinery, however they are not great places to relax in the garden. Why not, add a summerhouse to your garden this spring, providing the perfect garden room for relaxing, entertaining and watching the world go by.  Forest offers wide range of summerhouses, all designed to suit all tastes are available from Forest to have delivered and assembled.

Shiplap Dip Treated Summerhouses

All models are dip treated to provide protection from the elements and are perfect for smaller outdoor spaces, and each allow generous amounts of light in, whilst also providing a comfortable, sheltered and unique view of the garden.  Take a look at the compact yet functional Barleywood (RRP £469.99) and also the Maplehurst (RRP £469.99) which has a veranda, as does the Hollington (RRP £899.99), which also includes an opening window.

Forest’s Stroud (with a single door, RRP £429), Tetbury (with a double door, RRP £429) and Winchcombe (roomier and with a double door along the side of the building, RRP £499) summerhouses are all made with overlap timber for flexibility during hot weather and extra protection from rain.

Forest’s 12mm thick shiplap timber keeps the wind out – and the heat in when needed.  The Charlbury (RRP £499) model features one door, whereas the Bloxham (RRP £529) and Kempsford (RRP £569) models have two – with the Kempsford being bigger with doors along the side for a brighter and airier living space.

Shiplap Corner Summerhouses

27Honeybourne (£899.99), Blockley (RRP £799.99), and Cranborne (£699.99) summerhouses are all designed to minimise space and maximise corners of the garden.   Step inside the Honeybourne corner summerhouse with Matthew Biggs’ Forest TV video on Forest’s YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/kaWsTHn52EI?t=8s

Premium Summerhouse

28The Henley (RRP £2,799) is in a class of its own – in fact it is the only summerhouse in the range that not only features two large opening windows glazed with toughened glass, but also a striking black shingle roof.  The entire structure is made from pressure treated shiplap timber, and includes a lockable door and wood floor.
