At the heart of FeatherSnap’s bird recognition model is its in-house Ornithologist and Research Specialist, affectionately dubbed the resident “bird nerd”, Maria Kincaid. Her scientific expertise helped train the system to recognise a wide variety of species with impressive accuracy, supporting real-time education for users.

“FeatherSnap is about making bird watching accessible and engaging for everyone, explains Kincaid.  The STEM.org trustmark is an independent seal of approval proving that real-world wildlife observation can be a powerful STEM learning tool, and validation to parents and educators that they can trust and welcome our FeatherSnap wildlife cameras into the classroom.

“FeatherSnap is a tool that connects nature, schools and science and its unique smart features, designed to engage and inspire curiosity, will help to encourage children to learn more about birdlife and the natural world around them, whilst teaching the next generation to care about biodiversity. FeatherSnap makes learning fun, its STEM learning beyond worksheets”

FeatherSnap has been developed to engage and inspire students through hands-on learning, with unique educational smart features that allow you to:

Build your own Bird Book:

  • Each time a user saves a photo or video to their Bird Book, they unlock new knowledge and achievements.
  • Every logged bird is stored in a personal gallery under its species, complete with fun facts, food preferences, migration routes and range maps, together creating a digital guide that grows alongside the user’s experience.

Collect achievement badges:

  • Early badges – like First Snap or First Bird Book Log – celebrate the start of the journey. More advanced achievements reward users for spotting particular species, such as their first woodpecker or parid (tit species).

Connect with the birding community:

  • And for those who love to share, NestWork, FeatherSnap’s in-app social space (available to Premium subscribers), lets users post photos, exchange advice, and see what others are spotting across the UK.
