Organic grower and gardening fanatic, Steph Young – known for her social media account, Stephs_allotment – has been a RocketGro ambassador for 12 months now and credits the incredible range of organic, peat-free, low-carbon products for giving her one of her best growing years yet! Here, Steph tells us about the success she’s had with RocketGro, why sustainable products are so important to her, and what’s next on her GYO journey.
The magic of mulch
“I have been growing my own since I was just 17 and now spend all my time gardening and growing – I just love it! I used RocketGro Magic Mulch the year before I became an ambassador and had great success with it. I have to say, Magic Mulch is probably my favourite RocketGro product! I use it everywhere; pots, baskets, garden beds, allotment beds and in the greenhouses.
“When I became a RocketGro Ambassador in 2022, it was so exciting being able to work with and promote this new product. Over the past year I’ve used RocketGro for all my growing which has given me one of my best growing years yet!”
Making a difference
“Using sustainable products is really important to me, both in gardening and daily life. This past year, I’ve been pushing myself to focus on a more sustainable lifestyle: re-using all my plastic pots and plant labels, composting everything possible, growing and preserving my own food. I believe the more we can do the better; even little changes make a big difference.
“The fact that RocketGro is made in the UK is just amazing! Plus, the whole process of how it’s made is truly fascinating. I feel that using products produced in the UK is incredibly important to both gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Zero air miles, a natural, organic product and knowing exactly where it has come from are all important factors.”

“RocketGro is a super compost that is continually improving. The brand is still very new to the gardening community but I would highly recommend giving it a try. All RocketGro products are peat-free and give superior results. The great thing is that RocketGro provides products for every gardening need, including using pots and baskets, boosting the lawn, improving the soil, and everything in between. The packaging made using recycled plastics and is also recyclable, which gets a big thumbs up from me.”
A match made in heaven
“The best part of being a RocketGro ambassador is getting to see all the new products first-hand and trying them out too. It’s been great experimenting with the different composts when I’m growing.
“I’m looking forward to another year of working with the RocketGro brand and seeing where it takes my grow your own journey. This year I’m going to be trying to grow a few different things, such as sweet potatoes.
“As I said, I have been growing since I was a teenager. I worked in a garden centre and was given a bag of seed potatoes that had sprouts as long as my arm! I planted them and, at that very moment, I planted a bug that would turn my fingers green. I instantly wanted to grow more.
“Fast forward a few years and I’m now a Scottish lass living in beautiful North Yorkshire, working in a gorgeous, family-run garden nursery.
“I’ve just loved using the RocketGro products this past year and I’m looking forward to seeing what 2023 brings, with both RocketGro, and my ‘grow your own’ journey.”

RocketGro was founded in early 2021, born out of a meeting of minds of two friends, Tim and Toby. Tim’s family have been successfully farming on their 5000-acre farm in the heart of Somerset for over 100 years. The farm produces an amazingly rich soil nourishing organic by-product from their biogas plant. The biogas powers thousands of homes, and until RocketGro was born, this by-product was only spread over the farmland meaning the farm could avoid using chemical fertilisers.
