Get ready for winter

stock-image-winter-breakdownWith temperatures dropping to single digit figures as we near the end of the year, fuel filter replacement that delivers optimum filtration performance means meeting this challenge head on, as Jevgenij Lyzko, Managing Director at MANNOL UK explains.

The onset of winter weather means that motorists’ engine oil and filters take on greater importance than they might think. Contamination and cold temperatures are two of the biggest issues facing modern highly sophisticated diesel engines, as they are extremely sensitive to both. Even just a mere single particle of dirt can cause irreparable damage on the entire fuel system and poor maintenance can lead to droplets of water freezing in the fuel system, blocking the flow of fuel to the engine and wreaking havoc.

Jevgenij Lyzko, Managing Director at MANNOL UK points out: “As obvious as it sounds, what is essential for any driver to be aware of when temperatures dip very low is their choice of engine oil and filter.”

When oil is too thin, it won’t provide adequate protection for your engine. If the oil is too thick, your engine won’t start in cold weather because the thick, gloopy consistency will place added pressure on your battery and starter motor in order for it to spin the engine fast enough for it to fire. MANNOL always recommends to check your car’s manual and opt for the best suitably in terms of oil viscosity.

Colder temperatures will also significantly affect the oil filter, which also bears the brunt of such conditions. At 70ºC, most oils will turn into the texture of treacle. This means that when the engine first starts up, the oil pump forces cold, thick oil through it including the oil filter. There are various factors that determine whether the oil will pass through the filter in order to lubricate the engine, while particulates are filtered out, the choice of filter being one of them.

Jevgenij continues: “Only an OE quality, highly efficient fuel filter will remove the smallest particles while offering the least resistance to oil flow. Not only that, but it will also extract all dirt, rust, scale and water that has entered the fuel. Filtration of this standard also extends engine life and permits longer service intervals, with obvious benefits for vehicle owners.”
