Free garden advice for Cambridge walkers

greenfingers-hornbywhitefoot-prWant to enjoy a unique spring walk through Cambridge, visiting Jesus College and our Botanic Gardens, raise funds for charity and, at the same time, get free gardening advice along the route? Well, all that’s possible thanks to an invitation by Scotsdales Garden Centre to join six members of staff; Peter Jackson, BBC Radio Cambridge gardening expert; and walking teams from their expert gardening suppliers on the 10 mile or 20 mile routes from their Horningsea site to a finishing line at Great Shelford.

Friday 17th March is the date for your diary when we hope you and your friends will join us.  At the end of the walk you will be able to treat yourself to a tea and a slice (you will deserve it!) or something from the barbecue, or watch Triathlete, Heidi Towse, complete a 20 mile row on a static training machine set strategically on the finishing line at Scotsdales Garden Centre. Thanks to support from Young’s Coach Company, Ely, your exciting day will start with a with a luxury free ride from Scotsdales Nursery and Garden Centre at Great Shelford to the start point at Horningsea.

Gardening experts from Mr Fothergill’s Seeds, Newmarket and pot and container experts from Cadix, Elho as well as gardening glove experts Briers, will be on the walk willing and able to talk gardening to all-comers. Another very local gardening supplier providing a team of walkers is SBM Life Science, operating from the Technopark, Newmarket Road, who market well known ranges of garden fertilizers and control products including Phostrogen, Provado and Baby Bio, the country’s most famous name in house plant care. Not only will a team of these gardening gurus be on the walk, but the new company will also be sponsoring the event and providing 200 commemorative medals for all fund-raising walkers.

Members of the public are welcome to join this Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day walk free of charge – as long as they sign up to personally raise funds for Greenfingers Charity.

Speaking to Linda Petrons, Head of Fundraising at the charity we learn that every penny raised will be spent creating the precious gift of gardens for children who spend time in hospices. She told us, “Since 1999 Greenfingers Charity has created 51 gardens for children’s hospices and currently we are currently planning seven more gardens, four of which we would like to finish in the next 12 months. We are hoping that residents from the Cambridge area will join the teams from the gardening industry and help us raise sufficient funds to build an extra hospice garden this year. Just 200 walkers each raising funds through sponsorship could give us enough new funds to complete one more hospice garden for life limited children and their families to enjoy.”
